Our Organic Farming Apprenticeship includes six months of classes, field trips and lots of hands-on farming.

What is our Apprenticeship Program?

Apprenticeships immerse you into a field of study where you learn by doing amidst the constraints of labor, time and resources. They also positively influence our changing agriculture by growing strong farmers as well as supporting those of us already involved. They allow for the individual learning process while the group creates a completely unique event, the seasonal garden, which is never the same twice. At Horton Road Organics, our goal is to demonstrate a diverse, productive, ecological and enjoyable working farm. We hope to help both those exploring a career or refining newfound skills they've acquired. A 6 month season can truly introduce you to the pragmatic and potential side of not only farming, but of yourself.
Dakia Sowing Apprentice learning is mostly hands on. Unlike classroom learning, apprenticing on a farm involves strengthening the body by developing endurance and flexibility as well as the mind through observation and study. Students gain mastery over different tasks and develop an understanding of the working farm that comes with being part of a seasonal crew. A good portion of apprentices' time is spent working closely with farmers. This provides lots of opportunity for ongoing discussion yet requires active participation on the apprentices, part. Apprentices spend much of their time (as do we) planting, weeding, harvesting and preparing vegetables. They also dig and fertilize raised beds, go to Farmer's Markets, do deliveries, keep records, choose projects to pursue and write for farm newsletters. We believe it is best to create focused, energetic and limited work periods to accomplish our work so that apprentices know exactly what's expected of them and can enjoy a fair amount of "free time" relative to many operations.

Although hands-on experience is essential in farming, study is also important. Our program is framed by weekly informal classes designed to introduce major topics and resources for exploration. The level of engagement of these subjects is entirely up to the student. Classes are broken up by monthly field trips to a wide array of local farms that demonstrate the diversity within alternative agriculture. The season culminates is each apprentice's presentation of their "Faux Farm" - a tool used to address the beginner's questions of "Where do I want to go from here and how do I get there?"

Eligibility for the program includes commitment to the whole season, ability to work as a team, having adequate energy and good physical shape. Students grow if they are open to what there is to learn and not necessarily attached to a specific philosophy. Prior field experience can be very helpful but not as important as a willingness and focus in meeting the demands of the farm day to day. Most of our applicants are seriously exploring farming, gardening or related horticultural projects as a career.
