Article: Apprentice's Arrival

It’s becoming a tradition at our farm to ask the new apprentices in their own words what brought them to Horton Road to learn this craft. Many of you have been curious about their backgrounds and what draws them to do what is now “unconventional” in our culture. To grow food! You will undoubtedly be hearing about their experiences throughout the season and see them at market. We’ve been enjoying our settling in time with our new folks - all the questions and surprises of the typical farm day. We’ve also enjoyed some glorious home cooked lunches together and lots of laughter, dirt and hopeful days looking forward from this dubious rain to the light and heat!

Cara Corbin, Austin, TX

I grew up with a father who gardened. I have always loved good food. Working as a VISTA (Volunteers in service to America) in Austin at the Sustainable Food Center, I began to be educated about local food systems and the benefits they provide compared with a global food system. I wanted to become more intimately involved with this. I hope to farm someday and working here at Horton Rd. is a step in that direction.

Chris Manley, San Francisco, CA

There are so many good reasons to farm: Being outdoors, breathing the fresh air and listening to bird song all day; Actively participating in the miracle of life; Playing with dirt; Eating really good food you’ve cultivated from seed; sharing that wonderful food with others. How could I not give farming a try? When people say someone’s “bought the farm” they’re usually not complementing them on a prudent life choice. Still the idea does appeal to me, even if it now sounds overwhelming. Whatever my future pursuits, I know that growing stuff will be a highlight in my life.

Matthew Garrison, Tacoma, WA

What’s brought me to this beautiful farm is a desire to grow delicious organic food for people to fill both their bellies and their souls. Working amongst the elements keeps me close to the earth and in touch with the natural world and all it’s beauty I feel blessed to be on this path.
